Tech Talk Episode 9: Comparing Conformal Coating Chemistries

In this episode, we compare the different conformal coating chemistries including acrylic, polyurethane, epoxy, silicone and UV curable. Using different tests like adhesion, flexibility, solvent and temperature resistance, you’ll see the strengths and shortcomings of the different options and understand how a chemistry will work for your particular application.

Acrylic Conformal Coatings

These conductive coatings for plastic are 1-part solvent-based acrylic systems that are easy to apply and dry quickly. They are smooth, durable, and especially formulated for adhesion to plastics commonly used in PCB enclosures such as ABSPVCnylon and polycarbonate.

Epoxy Conformal Coatings

MG Chemicals now offers a 2-part epoxy conformal coating that provides exceptional chemical resistance for especially harsh environments. This coating is suggested for use under the most aggressive conditions for enhanced protection against fuel vapors, corrosive gases, and mechanical abrasion. It has a convenient 2:1 mix ratio, offers excellent adhesion on a variety of substrates, and is most effective at film thicknesses of 1 to 2 mils.

Silicone Conformal Coatings

MG Chemicals produces a range of silicone conformal coating products that offer enhanced heat resistance compared with other chemistries. These 1-part systems are fast curing, flexible and flame retardant, making them a suitable choice for many applications that experience a wide operating temperature range. These products are available in a variety of packaging options, ranging from aerosols to bladder packs, so they can accommodate almost any processing need.

Polyurethane Conformal Coatings

MG Chemicals offers a polyurethane conformal coating product which provides enhanced PCB protection from harmful solvents and corrosive gases compared to other coating chemistries. This 1-part coating is certified to both the UL 746E and IPC CC 830 standards for conformal coatings and is available in both liquid and aerosol formats.

UV Conformal Coatings

MG Chemicals offers a 1-part UV conformal coating designed for high volume, high throughput coating applications. This coating cures within seconds upon exposure to UV light and contains a secondary moisture cure mechanism for shadow areas. Our UV conformal coating offers exceptional chemical and abrasion resistance compared to other chemistries.
