Noisy Pots? This month's AppGuide
Diagram of worn potentiometer How Potentiometers (Pots) Malfunction

1. The wiper literally wears a path through the conductive strip. When this happens, they don't make contact anymore and the pot quits working.

2. During the normal life of the pot (that is the wear-out process) the bits of resistive material gouged from the resistive strip stay around and can actually lift the wiper from the resistive strip. Dirt and dust that get into the pot will have the same effect.

3. Sparks are generated while the wiper is being moved around the tracks. This can cause pits on the surface of the track causing discontinuities.

4. In harsh environments such as those in military situations, small vibrations will cause mechanical wear of the pot components. Click here for complete AppGuide (PDF) >>
